Meridian is an independent advisory for Queensland families navigating senior subject selection, the ATAR, scholarships, medicine, and university or TAFE pathways. We help parents and students plan a roadmap for their future while keeping as many doors open as possible.

Mostly parents and students in Years 9–12 across Queensland. Typically our clients are choosing Year 11 subjects, mapping a competitive degree (including medicine), weighing TAFE or university, or sorting through scholarship options. The 10-minute free call is our way of ensuring our skillset matches with your child's needs — we can assure you that we won't suggest a consultation unless we're sure we can help.

No. Meridian is a team of independent advisers. We don't provide tutoring for school subjects, the UCAT, or anything else, but part of our service is connecting you with the right tutor for your child's needs if desired.

Meridian is a team of students who've been through the process themselves, and for that reason, we can usually provide far more helpful insight than guidance counsellors. The team is deliberately made up of students from a range of pathways, so we can match your child to a pathway mentor in their field of interest and provide honest advice. Guidance counsellors rarely actually take opinioned stances on your child's senior subject choices or career options, which is often highly problematic. Sometimes you need to hear a firm: "I don't think this plan will get you where you want to go, here's what I'd suggest instead..."

There's no strings attached, its just for the both of us to see if we're a good match.

Depending on the stage your child's at, there are a range of times that suit best. Subject choices are made in Years 9 and 10, Medicine conversations are best had in Years 9 to 12, and university and scholarship conversations can be had anytime. Earlier is usually better: subject choices made in Year 10 can constrain options for years. If you’re unsure of timing, start with the free chat.

Yes. When you book a pathway mentor consultation, our Subject Selection Guide is included at no extra cost. You can also purchase the guide on its own if you prefer a self-paced starting point before speaking with us.

We usually prefer to speak to a parent or guardian over the phone at first, just to get a sense of where they think their child's at. For the full consultation, it depends on the child's needs, but we'd typically ask that parent/s and student attend the session together, just so everyone's on the same page, but it's also very common for just the parent/s to attend. We don't usually accomodate students attending alone.

A subject that "scales" well will drag your child's ATAR up, and a subject that scales poorly will drag your child's ATAR down. Scaling is typically considered to be decided based on subject difficulty and varies slightly year-to-year. For reference, in 2025, a 94% in General Mathematics contributed around the same boost to a student's ATAR as a 66% in Mathematical Methods, as General Maths scales poorly while Maths Methods scales well.

Not automatically. Scaling and subject difficulty matter, but so do performance, interest, and prerequisites. An easier load that ignores prerequisites can close doors later, and student choices surrounding subject difficulty are usually skewed from stories they've heard — we don't believe important decisions should be made on rumours. In general, we help your child strike this balance between interest, ATAR scaling, prerequisites, and difficulty.

It depends on the pathway. Many degrees have clear maths or science prerequisites or assumed knowledge; others do not. Dropping too early can remove options (including competitive health and STEM routes). We map what each choice keeps open or closes before you decide.

Yes. TAFE, apprenticeships, and employment pathways still benefit from subjects that build capability, keep bridging options open, and match the student’s strengths. See our TAFE, Defence, & Other service if trade or vocational routes are on the table.

No, we're simply advisers. We improve clarity, sequencing, and decision quality, but outcomes still depend on the student’s work, school delivery, selection processes, and timing. We're here to answer questions, make recommendations, and point your child on the right direction.

We are based in Brisbane and work with families online Queensland-wide. All of our consultations can be done by video call; in-person options may be available by arrangement.
